Sport is having great impacts on the lives of individuals in a society. Sports have been like a link bringing people from different backgrounds, races and culture together. Sports can be grouped either into individual, team, racket or water sports and it is professional athletes that make up sport teams. When these athletes are transferred, it will definitely have effects on the team they are coming from or going to. This effect that transfer of professional players brings would definitely have some implication economically on the society which can be of positive or negative effect.
The study of socio economic implication of transfer of professional players has increased in the last ten years in response to a large increase in the demand and supply of professional players around the world. These professional players have been known to be the driving factor for generating money and sports fans for their particular sport team all over the world in addition to passion for that particular sport. Business men and women are now looking at sports as revenue by which they can make more money, so when they take over these sport club side they try to get as many good professional players as they can get in other to win trophies, get more supporters for the club which will in turn make huge gain for them. Sports has grown over the years to become a multi billion dollars industry which has helped in improving the country by providing employment for youths and act as an avenue for bringing peace.
Professional players can play for different club side for the purpose of either gaining more skills or making more money. Generally, professional players transfer can contribute positively or negatively to the development of sports in a particular country. For instance, when a player from a club side like Kano pillars in Nigeria is bought by a club like La galaxy in United States of America, such player would;
a) Generate money for the club
b) Act as a source of foreign exchange
c) Increase the amount of money in circulation in Nigeria
d) Develop more skills that might be needed when representing his home country
These points listed above would definitely foster an increase in the development of sports in the player’s home country but the disadvantage of this transfer to the particular club and country might include;
a) Taking of the talents away from the country
b) A decrease in the club’s performance
c) A reduction in the fan base of that particular club
d) Sponsorship of that particular club might be reduced
e) A reduce or slow down in sports development in that country
f) When best athletes are sold off, the excitement in that league might reduce gradually.
g) The performance of that club might be greatly reduced
The above listed fact might actually reduce the rate of development of sports in that particular country because of the county’s best talent are lost to other countries who relatively have an ambition to attain full development in their sport industry.
The sport industry consists of various sports and it is professional athletes that make up a sport club. It is then noted that it is these professional athletes that are the major factor in developing sports in a particular country because without them, there is no sports league, no transfer of players to generate revenue and most likely no supporters would be available.
