FACTORS AFFECTING EFFECTIVE COACHING IN NIGERIA

Nigerian sports have not been stable over the years because it has been given little or no attention at all. The main issue that has made Nigerian sports stagnant includes;

1. CORRUPTION: The issue of corruption has drastically reduced the development of sports in Nigeria. It is believed that the people that are meant to foster sports development are the corrupt ones and nobody seems to be doing any thing about it. A typical example is Amos Adamu, a Nigerian who was found to asking for bribe, there may be many others like that but lack of evidence has made it difficult to fish them out. It is noticed that if these corrupt people keep leading top spot roles in our sports federation, sports development would not move forward because funds would always be misappropriated, there would always be match fixing, officials would always be bribed, the best man for any sports job like coaching would not always be chosen and even some players that are very good would be abandoned because they don’t know people of high rank.

2. ORGANIZATION: Generally, sports in Nigeria is not usually well organized and this has made it’s development in Nigeria slower. Matches are usually not organized, for instance if a club side in Kano state goes to play a league match in Lagos state on Friday by 2p.m, the team would have to leave on Thursday morning by bus so as to get to Lagos in the morning on Friday if the bus didn’t break down on the road and they are expected to play by afternoon. The same team is then told they’ll be having their next match in Sokoto which is at the far north, followed by another match in Cross river state which is at the south. After these set of matches, it is noticed that the players start getting fatigue because of the long hour journeys they encounter every time in addition to the very bad road in Nigeria.

3. SALES OF PLAYERS ABROAD: Nigerian clubs usually use sales of players as a major revenue for them selves but little did they know that they are reducing the quality of sports in their country. When good players are sold, the club sides just features average players in their games and this make them lost fans in addition to sending eager sponsors away from the league. In addition to that, the club’s performance in the confederation’s cup and other international club meet would definitely be reduced because their very good talent has been sold off to clubs in countries that are trying to have a fully developed sport industry by bringing professional players from all over the continent to their league.

4. SPONSORSHIP: The role sponsorship plays in development of sports are numerous. Sponsorship can either be form the jersey, foot wears, stadiums and even TV rights. The main driving factor that has been pursuing major sponsors from Nigerian sporting team has been the issue of corruption, organization and sales of players abroad. The companies know that sports in the country are not stable and so that they won’t make a loss, they better not venture into it at all.
