There are many different types of leagues around the world. These can range men’s to women’s league. Most sports try as much as possible to have a league in other to make their athletes busy through out the season. Some sports like soccer governed by FIFA, basket ball governed by FIBA and athletics governed by IAAF have been common and are played by many people because of its continuity shown in its league. In some other countries there are leagues for sports like ice hockey, American football, rugby, tennis, field hockey, cricket, base ball and so on. For example on the professional level of soccer, national teams compete for a place in the world cup competition. There are over 190 teams competing at this level. World cup competition is considered to be the most prestigious league of soccer in the world. Past the world cup competitions, the continental championships make up the following most prestigious leagues in world. The continental championships are organized by a continental confederation, and national teams compete with each other. These national leagues include the European Championship (UEFA), the Copa América (CONMEBOL), African Cup of Nations (CAF), the Asian Cup (AFC), the CONCACAF Gold Cup (CONCACAF) and the OFC Nations Cup (OFC).
In domestic competitions, each country has its own leagues, consisting of many different divisions. Throughout the season teams within the same divisions play each other. At the end of the season, the team with the best record is promoted to a higher division, while the lowest ranking team is demoted to a lower division. The teams ranked highest in each country’s league qualify to play in international competitions the following season.
On an amateur level, soccer is played in many different types of leagues. In America, youth leagues consist of the most basic leagues (recreational) and advance through district leagues, select leagues, and state level leagues. Some youth leagues even advance all the way up to national leagues and compete internationally. As soccer becomes more and more popular in America, more and more leagues are being developed. 6 V 6 leagues have also become very popular. These are leagues in which there are only 6 players on each team. The game is played on a much smaller field and promotes more touches on the ball, helping with passing skills. Indoor soccer is also very popular. It consists of both amateur and professional level competition. It is usually played in an indoor arena (such as a turf covered hocked rink). Outside of the United states there is a variation of indoor soccer deemed “Futsal” by FIFA. Futsal is played between two teams of 5 players but unlike indoor soccer there are sidelines which denote out of bounds areas. Balls cannot be played off of side boards. Futsal is also played with a much smaller and heavier ball than the regulation ball.
There are many different types of leagues throughout the world, ranging in skill level and age. No matter how good a player is or how new a player is at the game of soccer, there is an appropriate league for him or her. A passionate player in the game of soccer can always find a place in one league or another. Each league is different, playing by the same rules but with different skill levels. It is important that a player finds the league that best suites him or her.
